What is Blooming Today?

Fri 22 May 2009 1:01 pm

I love spring...late spring! The cherry blossoms have all blown away but colour is popping up everywhere. Most of the lilac are in full and fading bloom and the giant poppies are bursting open everywhere. They don't last long though.

Got a new camera recently (still a 10.2mp cheap piece of junk) so I'm out walking every evening after work and invading gardens everywhere. I pass by the some of the same gardens every day and I find new things popping up each time I pass and trying to keep track of what is blooming and when. They are shown in the order I strolled by them, and nevermind the blurry ones...it was rather breezy and flowers don't stay still.

Relaxation

Sun 10 May 2009 10:12 pm

Thought I would share my Mother's Day project with you. Turned out pretty good. I just used the 'make movie' tools in Picasa.

I made it with my mother in mind as we both love to 'get our hands in the dirt' but the more I watch it, the more I relax Wink

Take a lookie

My Bad

Sat 9 May 2009 5:19 am

09-MAY-09

I've half completed this project but sidetracked by spending some time making my mother's day present and other stuff.

Doesn't matter right now the details of the species right now. The map is below. Just go out and walk the route. All the petals are falling and they will get all over you and your car and your dog. The street gutters are all line with pink and with wind picks them up and they swirl around in the air.

I've taken more photos and other things are popping up like lilac are budding and bursting all over the place. Rhododra (Rhododendron sp?) of all shapes and sizes are bursing open everywhere. and dogwood are exploding white. We need a little more rsin to satisfy the greedy dogwood. Oh, and the neighbourhood to the direct south of this area has amazing perennial gardens blooming all shapes and colours of blooms.

Just take the map and go. Oh, and the strawberries and tomatoes must be in bloom somewhere because I've run out of Reactine and I'm itchy as he-double hockey sticks.

I have all the pictures and materials to complete the map and found many more things as I went along the route many times and have a few more spots to place on the map.

...tbc after Mother's Day

Vancouver - Fairview Slopes Cherry Tree Tour

Mon 4 May 2009 5:30 am

Putting this together is harder than I thought. I've got the map done, a basic outline and thousands of sorted photos to choose from. I'll start by publishing the map.

Oh, and don't scoff at my lo-qual photos. I need a new camera YESTERDAY.

May 4 -- If you happen to be in the area right now, go to area 7. It's raining cherry blossoms. Click on the map below to enlarge.

Area 01 _ NE Corner of West 10th and Heather, Vancouver

I decided to start the walk here because it is close to public transit (Broadway & Heather) or you can usually find metered parking (I think it is free after 8pm) and it's also one block south of Broadway so you can begin or end with dinner or a nice coffee.

As you look north you can see an ocean of Kanzan blooming down the hill. Take a closer look at the third tree north of the corner. It's a young tree and I think it is a Shirofugen.

Area 01 Slideshow Here

‘Kanzan’ (“bordering mountain” = ‘Kwanzan’ = ‘Sekiyama’): The most commonly planted of all flowering cherries: fast growing with a large upright, spreading crown and with huge, double pink flowers produced in late April or May. Leaves emerge bronze green at the same time as the flower buds open. A Sato Zakura in cultivation in Japan since the 17th century.

‘Shirofugen’: (“white Buddha”) A popular May-flowering Sato Zakura cultivar known from the 15th century in Japan, ‘Shirofugen’ is also called ‘Fugenzo’. It is recognized for its strong, broad, tabular crown and long lasting, fully double flowers that emerge white from pink buds then gradually age to deep pink before they fall.

Area 1a. View looking down (North) on Heather Street

Take a little walk down Heather St. from 10th, past Broadway to West 8th Ave. Look left and right. Look up and look down. It's Kanzan heaven. Note that on the photo date (April 23, 2009), the blooms were only 80% bloom.

Pink Pictures Please???

Wed 29 Apr 2009 12:31 am

Okay, well never say that I don't respond to the needs of my viewing public (thanks Khurram). I have just the cure for you. (Oh, and boo-hoo for you Calgary! Down in FLAMES!)

I am ALMOST finished a map and photo tour of the radius of Vancouver General Hospital. I'm putting the final order of the points on the map and will be taking a set of photos in the early morning tomorrow. Will take me a few days to finish up, because it is so hard to stay inside!

...here's another sneak peak. It's the same grove that contains the mystery tree.

Click on those boxes up there to change the colour scheme. Green is my fave.

It was good of you to include Homelessness Awareness Week, me and my first wife used to go to the park every weekend and give out free coffee and donuts to homeless. Don't have a lot of that were I live now, I am lucky.
