Scandinavia and Technology

Sat 9 Sep 2006 3:23 am

[ Category: Technical Garbage ]
While the world keeps busy killing innocent people and spending billions of dollars on self proclaimed wars, the scandinavians keep busy inventing and appreciating technology - and giving honor to those who did something to help the mankind and humanity.

Yes, its the scandinavians who invented linux, bluetooth, IRC and yes nokia and ericsson are scandinavian companies. And yes nobel prize is given and started by scandinavians and yes the millenium technology award is also a scandinavian effort to admire and honor people and technology.

Tarja Halonen, the president of Finland, presented the 2006 Millennium Technology Prize to a Japanese Scientist, Shuji Nakamura, along with a 1 million euro prize and the "Peak" trophy, at a ceremony that took place yesterday in Helsinki, Finland.

What did Nakamura invented? Well.. he invented something that would change the life of humans forever, and even better, in a good way with high quality. He invented new sources of light. The blue, green and white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and the blue laser diode. White LEDs could provide a sustainable, low-cost alternative to lightbulbs, especially in developing countries. Blue LEDs are used in flat-screen displays, while blue lasers are already being exploited in the next generation of DVD player.

Images show Nakamura, the blue laser, and the blue led. The first picture also shows the finnish president handing him the award.

Quote Professor Shuji Nakamura wrote:
”Using LEDs for lighting could halve the amount of electricity consumed for this purpose.”

Quote ScienceWatch wrote:

Blue light has the shortest wavelength of visible light. Build a blue laser diode, and you could quadruple the amount of data that could be read and stored on a compact disc, a CD-ROM, or a digital video disc (DVD) player. With red and green laser diodes already on the shelves, blue was the last of the primary colors left to tackle, and if that could be done, one could imagine a device that combined blue, red, and green and emitted white light, perhaps putting the light bulb as we know it out of business.

"I actually thought it looked very easy to make blue LEDs," says Shuji Nakamura of Nichia Chemical Industries Ltd., Tokushima, Japan. "I thought, blue means I just have to change the color—I just have to change the material."

For two decades, researchers working for the biggest players in the electronics industry, from RCA and Hewlett-Packard to Matsushita and Sony, tried their hands at the blue laser diode and failed. Nakamura, a self-described country boy, did it while working for Nichia Chemical Industries Ltd. in Tokushima, Japan.

These are the good people and good efforts that are helping the entire human kind, for a long time to come. The Japanese - thats what I call technology with quality!

HVD - Holographic Versatile Disc

Tue 29 Aug 2006 7:18 am

[ Category: Technical Garbage ]
You may or may not have heard the term HVD that stands for "Holographic Versatile Disc". Well if you havent, you will soon. Because that is the future Very Happy

Images Courtesy: Optware, HVD-Alliance

Just like CD (Compact Disc), DVD (Digital Video Disc) or the Blu-Ray or HD-DVD (High-definition Digital Video Disk) formats, HVD probably will look the same. But it has enormous gigantic data transfer capacities and data storage capacities. We are talking terabytes here. The technology would be in the common market as they say, by the end of this year.

Developed in Japan, this concept of discs are revolving around Hologram. Holography is a method of recording patterns of light to produce a three-dimensional object. The recorded patterns of light are called a hologram. The simple but revolutionary concept of HVD comes from inventor, Mr. Horimai’s long time experience in optical disk development and his idea to combine Collinear™ technology with the conventional optical disk technology.

To me, it only adds to the idea that the entire universe is infact a hologram. A holographic technology to record and deliver information, sounds much promising and realistic indeed.

If you like to know more details here are some helpful sites:

Amazing.. isn't it !

Chinese Power Display.. Artificial Sun, EAST

Sat 29 Jul 2006 2:09 am

[ Category: Technical Garbage ]
Continuing the discussion of Nuclear Fusion from my earlier post, here is something interesting. China at its best!

The story reads:

Quote Quote:
BEIJING, July 24 (UPI) -- The first plasma discharge from China's experimental advanced superconducting research center -- the so-called "artificial sun" -- is set to occur next month.

The discharge, expected about Aug. 15, will be conducted at Science Island in Hefei, in east China's Anhui Province, the Peoples Daily reported Monday.

Scientists told the newspaper a successful test will mean the world's first nuclear fusion device of its kind will be ready to go into actual operation, the newspaper said.

The plasma discharge will draw international attention since some scientists are concerned with risks involved in such a process. But Chinese researchers involved in the project say any radiation will cease once the test is completed.

The experiment will take place in a structure made of reinforced concrete, with five-foot-thick walls and a three-foot-thick roof.

More details at China's People's Daily Online. [english version]

Quote Quote:
The project, dubbed EAST (experimental advanced superconducting Tokamak), is being undertaken by the Hefei-based Institute of Plasma Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It will require a total investment of nearly 300 million yuan (37 million U.S. dollars), only one fifteenth to one twentieth the cost of similar devices being developed in the other parts of the world.

A Tokamak is a toroidal (doughnut-shaped) magnetic plasma confinement device, the leading candidate for producing magnetic fusion energy. The term tokamak comes from the Russian words: "toroidalnaya", "kamera", and "magnitnaya", which mean "toroidal, chamber, magnetic". The last letter g was replaced by k to avoid analogy with the word magic. It was invented in the 1950s by Igor Yevgenyevich Tamm and Andrei Sakharov.

I wonder if one day chinese sun would be so cheap like everything else, small countries could buy 10 chinese "sun" instead of spending money on something like ITER..

So long for ITER. The sun rises in the EAST.

China does it again! Shay Shay Gongheguo Very Happy

ITER - Nuclear Fusion Reactor

Thu 25 May 2006 4:06 am

[ Category: Technical Garbage ]
Today i found an interesting scientific news after a long time. Its about ITER - The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor. The project costs around 10 billion euro and is aimed at building a nuclear fusion reactor. Fusion taps energy from reactions like those that power the Sun. The technical details are interesting. They say the demonstration reactor would be completed by 2040.

The article at BBC and the ITER website explains about the project. Following images are published with permission of ITER.

It just amazes me where this world is going to. Is that our end or is this our begining?

I've been away for awhile. I haven't been receiving updates. So I changed email addresses, maybe that will fix it.

Sorry about the bad news and I hope something good comes of it.
