PLEASE HELP!!!!

I have have a Toshiba Tecra A2. The hard drive completely died last week and I had a brand new one installed. Everything was lost so I had to have all my programs re-installed as well.

Now my Fn + F9 key does NOTHING!! I can NOT disable my touchpad. I have tried every thing suggested here and I am pulling my hair out. I took out the battery, held the on/off button down for 30 secs. I unplugged everything then replugged. I uninstalled the TouchPad unlity and re-installed. The computer guy claims that it WAS working when my laptop left the shop (but before the software re-installed). But it is not working and I am getting so frustrated because i HAVE to be able to turn this thing off.

PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME. I don't think its fried because the computer guy said it was working. ANYONE have another suggestion?

Hi kw, assuming that you did a clean install of Windows XP on your Tecra A2, have you tried to download and install the following utilities ?

Toshiba Touchpad Disable/Enable Utility for Windows XP/2000 (v2.05.00; 03-24-2003; 1.18M)

Alps Pointing Device Driver for Windows XP/2000 (v6.0.303.4; 01-21-2004; 2.43M)

Also make sure your any hot key combination is working. So try Fn + Esc (means hold FN and press ESC simultaneously while still holding FN). If that mutes your sound, then ok try FN + F7 and that should do something to your display.

You can also find a copy of your User Manual here or here. Pages 106-110 explains about Fn key combinations.

Post  3.  Posted: Thu 20 Apr 2006 1:28 am     TNX 4 RESPONDING Still Not working

Hi,

Thank you for your response. I have tried all of those suggestions as well. I did uninstall and reinstall those ultilities. I also installed the Fn-esse thing which doesn't even show Fn + F9. I spent way too much time on this thing! I really don't think its fried but its still not working. Even when I manually disable it through the Control Panel it still doesn't shut off. Crying or Very sad Question

Thanks for your time.

Ok to solve this problem we need to go through a few more details and some step by step workarounds.

1. What operating system do you have. If XP then what Service Pack.
2. Was it a clean install from an original Microsoft disc or was it Toshiba recovery disc that you used to reinstall everything.
3. Does your FN+ESC mutes sound and FN+F7 changes display settings.
4. You said it is "fried". Is your touchpad even working at all ? or is it just the FN+F9 not disabling/enabling it.
5. Do you use an external mouse. If yes is it wireless or wired USB.

Finding answers to these will help pinpoint the problem.

i don't know if this will work or not
but i had the same problem i format my whole system and install a new copy of windows ( not the one that came with the laptop)
and well after installing the drivers from the toshiba site and restarting,
my alps touch pad went totally dead and nothing can be used
this is what i had did:
first thing that i did was do a system restore ( located in start->all program->accessories->system tools) and recover to a checkpoint before you install the toshiba alps driver
then download alps driver from hp
i think its newer than the toshiba one so i gave it a try
http://h18007.www1.hp.com/supp.....23129.html
after installing it, everything worked great
i hope this works for you because it did for me
guys before you try this make sure you make a check point in the system restore before installing the driver
its a great tool that windows have and sometimes may be bad because it hugs hdd space
